Consultant Congenital Cardiologist
Dr Michael Rigby is Consultant Congenital Cardiologist, teacher, researcher and writer at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London. He has knowledge, experience and expertise in most areas of heart disease in the young and a special interest in interventional cardiac catheterisation in congenital heart disease in children and adults. Prior to his current appointment he trained in cardiology not only in London but also in Leeds, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto.
He has organised annual courses in neonatal and infant heart disease and in echocardiography in congenital heart disease. He has lectured, taught or organised courses not only in the UK but also in many other countries including Germany, France, Switzerland, Greece, Cyprus, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Singapore, Japan, the Philippines, the United States, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
He has published over 180 papers on congenital heart disease and he is the author or co-author of 55 chapters and 10 books including Paediatric Cardiology (Churchill Livingstone, 2010); Echocardiography in Congenital Heart Disease Made Simple (Imperial College Press, 2005); Colour Atlas of Congenital Heart Disease (Mosby - Wolf, 1995) and The Diagnosis of Congenital Heart Disease (Castle House, 1985). The latest book, Pediatric Heart Disease: A Practical Guide, written and edited with Piers Daubeney and Michael Gatzoulis (2013) is very popular around the world.
He is responsible for a successful programme of interactive videoconferencing and telemedicine. He holds telemedicine outpatient clinics and also arranges distance education between London and universities in Greece, Cyprus, Brazil, France and Chile as well as with other parts of the United Kingdom.
His hobbies include playing piano and singing and focusing on keeping fit through regular exercise and appropriate diet.
